A first look behind the scenes

This unforgettable night took place during the spring semester of my freshman year. I walked into the Schermerhorn Symphony Center with a few of my classmates, unsure of what to expect. It was my very first fashion show—and I’ll admit, I set my expectations low. I thought I’d help dress a few models and be out the door.

I wasn’t prepared for the magic I was about to witness.

For the first time, I saw how a professional fashion show comes together behind the scenes. It’s easy to underestimate how much time, energy, and coordination goes into a one-hour show—until you’re standing in the middle of it. I watched as backstage crew, lighting technicians, music directors, and models moved in sync, each person playing a crucial role in bringing the runway to life. It was a beautifully orchestrated chaos.

Then, just a few hours before the show began, I heard sudden clapping echoing around the room. Confused, I turned around—and there he was.

Prabal Gurung had entered the building, sunglasses on, exuding a powerful presence. That moment is forever etched in my memory. For the first time, I saw what a true fashion designer looked like in person—graceful, confident, and commanding. He was everything I aspired to be.

That night didn’t just impress me—it ignited something deeper.

A clear reminder: this is what I’m meant to do.
